of Colli Pisani ...

Maybe less famous than other DOC wines areas, Colli Pisani (Pisa hills) are a group of hills to the southeast of Pisa. None of these undulating hills is higher than 650 feet, the landscape is a soft and gentle one, and the climate is mild, tempered by the sea breezes which protect the area from extreme temperatures and from spring frosts as well.
The soil is a complex and interesting one: once upon a time, the zone was covered by the sea and the terrain is still rich in marine fossils.
There is sand and clay, iron and other minerals.
An ancient tradition guides the proud wine makers: some fifteenth century writings tell about these wines and also, under the Granducato di Toscana (Grand Duchy of Tuscany), the excellent Pisa hills wines were said to reach the markets of Florence, where they had a very good reputation.
In 1965 local wine producers created a consortium, choosing to name their wine after the Roman centurion Torpé.
The clayey structure of soil, gives source to different wine varieties: the most popular is the Tuscan Trebbiano.
What will surprise you of this territory is a noble, simple atmosphere welcoming you.
Estates are often very small villages built around a central noble house, where the original owners still live and work into their wineries, that they are proud to open to you.
All around vineyards and woods extend, following the sweet curves of green hills viewing the sea and the near territories of Florence and Lucca.
Our personal suggestion is to discover this incredible DOC wine area, that has much to give you, even if it is not as famous as other ones.

A typical wine tour in Pisa hills starts in the morning, at about 9.30, from your accommodation, to reach hills in the south of Pisa.

Following this sweet hills, similar to Siena famous countryside, we reach Ghizzano, a small hillside hamlet situated at 650 feet above sea level. A member of the winery staff will guide you throughout the estate, from the historical garden to the vineyards, from the cellar to the historical villa. This experience will end with a wine and oil tasting in the old hall of the villa, followed by a country lunch.

our favorite WINERIES in Pisa hills

Azienda Agricola San Gervasio – San Gervasio (Pisa)

Azienda Agricola San Gervasio – San Gervasio (Pisa)SanGervasio is tucked in an enchanting corner 25 km East of Pisa, on the first gentle hills of the river Era valley. The proximity of the sea and its breezes contribute to clean the air from the haze and guarantee a constant and abundant illumination of the vineyards. Sangervasio produces wines with a contemporary style, made with the contribution of international varieties, but mostly with local grapes, which are the estate’s main focus: Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino and Trebbiano. Sangervasio’s cellars are situated in the historical buildings, in perfect harmony with the farm and the background. The technology respects architecture and the tradition.

Tenuta di Ghizzano – Ghizzano (Pisa)

Tenuta di Ghizzano – Ghizzano (Pisa)Ghizzano is a small hillside hamlet situated at 650 feet above sea level in the north western part of Tuscany, halfway between Florence and Pisa. This is the Colline Pisane production zone, a group of hills to the southeast of Pisa. None of these undulating hills is higher than 650 feet, the landscape is soft and gentle and the climate is mild, tempered by the sea breezes which protect the area from extreme temperatures and from spring frosts as well. The soil is a complex and interesting one: once upon a time, the zone was covered by the sea and the terrain is still rich in marine fossils. There is sand and clay, iron and other minerals. The owner family arrived at Ghizzano towards the end of the 14th century. Wine and oil were, from the very beginning, the centre of the agriculture of the various farms which Tenuta di Ghizzano – Ghizzano (Pisa)composed the estate. For centuries production went forward with a deep respect for tradition. In these last fifteen years they have tried hard to combine tradition and innovation and technology. The owner family’s goal is to continue to invest in vineyards in order to push the total surface under vines to 60-65 acres and produce a limited quantity of truly high level bottles for the market, respecting the character which the territory gives to the wines, maintaining and reinforcing the elegance and aromatic richness which these gently rolling hills give to the grapes.
