The Tenuta Argentiera estate is situated on the coast of the Toscany between Livorno and Grosseto, about 100km south-west of Florence, on the southernmost border of the small but prestigious Bolgheri DOC zone. It is part of the former Tenuta di Donoratico estate owned by the Serristori, an influential Florentine family who were given permanent use of this land by the Medici family in 1512. Following a period of political turmoil the Medici had returned to power, also thanks to the Serristoris’ support. In Etruscan times marshes, natural springs and silver mines (the name “Argentiera” derives from “argento”, Italian for silver) were found on the uplands of the estate making it an important mining and farming area. Soon after the lands , destined to pasture and olive-grove, were part of the Bossi Pucci family estate and, from the beginning of the 70’s, of the Paradiso estate, owned by Mr. Scaglietti, famous orthopaedic surgeon. Today the Tenuta is jointly owned by brothers Corrado and Marcello Fratini, renowned entrepreneurs from Florence, and Marchese Piero Antinori. The owners of this delightful land have paid close attention to its ecological vocation and landscape. In the Bolgheri DOC zone Argentiera is both the closest estate to the sea and the highest in altitude, stretching from the plains up to the hills. The spectacular view from the vineyards extends from Baratti in the south to Castiglioncello in the north, including the islands of the Tuscan archipelago (Elba, Gorgona and Capraia, with Corsica in the background). The land, which is very well-suited to the production of great red wines, is considered to be among the most beautiful in the Bolgheri area. |
