Chianti wine tour

A typical Chianti wine tour offers you the possibility to visit some famous historical wineries, where you can both explore the world of wine and discover pieces of unknown history.

1)Castello di Verrazzano & Castello di Fonterutoli

During this tour you will visit two famous ancient wineries of the Chianti area (where wine is made since centuries), where you will be able to “touch” the Chianti wine history! Castello di Verrazzano was an etruscan then a roman settlement before becoming the property of the Verrazzano family in the VIIth century. Giovanni da Verrazzano, who discovered the bay of new York and the main part of the east coast of America, was in fact born here in 1485. The "vineyards situated in Verrazzano" are mentioned in a manuscript which dates back to 1170 and is preserved at the abbey of Passignano!
Castello di Fonterutoli, instead, already known by the Etruscans and referred to in Roman times as "Fons Rutolae" and "Fons Rutilant", was considered a stopping-off point where travelers between Florence and Siena could find refreshment. A popular legend says that the borders of Siena and Florence areas were defined by a horse race: two riders started at the crowing of the cock, one from Florence and the other from Siena. The border would be set at the place of their meeting. The Florentines chose a little black rooster, skinny and starved, who crowed constantly out of hunger. The morning of the race, this rooster crowed long before dawn, which permitted the Florentine rider to start out with a great advantage and to cover far more distance before meeting his opposite number, almost on the outskirts of Siena, at Fonterutoli!

- The car driver will come to pick up you from your accommodation at 8.00 a.m.
- Arrival at Castello di Verrazzano at 10,00 a.m.
- Guided visit to the historical gardens of the castle and to the ancient cellars.
- Guided tasting of the best wines and products of the estate:
“Ser Chiaro” (white wine) or “Verrazzano Rosso” (red wine), wintage Chianti Classico DOCG, wintage Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva, “Supertuscan”, Extra virgin olive oil and “Balsamico di Verrazzano”.
- Visit to the close village of Greve, considered to be the “capital” of the Chianti area.
- Stop at the famous historical butcher “Macelleria Falorni”, with a huge display of prosciuttos, salamis and sausages hanging from the ceiling, where you will visit also the cheese room in the historical basement!
- Departure from Greve and lesureily drive along vineyards and green hills up to Castello di Fonterutoli.
- Tasting lunch at the osteria of Castello di Fonterutoli, where you will enjoy wine, food and a wonderful view on the hills up to Siena!
- After lunch, easy walk along the cosy hamlet of Fonterutoli, where the omonymous castle is located, visit of the historical garden and of the ancient cellars of Castello di Fonterutoli.
- Then, after a stop at the wine shop of the estate, where you will be able to buy wine and extra virgin olive oil, you will come back to Lucca, enjoying for the last time the wonderful lanscape of Chianti!

2)Castello di Verrazzano and Badia a Passignano

Another tour during which you will visit ancient and prestigious wineries!
Castello di Verrazzano and Badia di Passignano, located in the heart of Chianti Classico countryside. It is an old abbey founded in 395 A.C by the Archbishop of Florence.
Monks of the Vallombrosian Order still live in the abbey and are the keepers of its cultural and historical treasures. Since the Medieval age, the Abbey and the Order have been particularly famous because of the Monk's devotion to classical literature and musical texts, for their scientific research promotion (Galileo Galilei taught here in 1587) and for their of taking care of the land through cultivation especially of vines and forest.
Today, the beautiful cellars of the Abbey are used by the famous Antinori family to produce their wines. So, if you will have the chance to visit this place, you will taste the award winning wines by Antinori!

- The car driver will come to pick up you from your accommodation at 8.00 a.m.
- Visit to Castello di Verrazzano, a deep trip inside wine world, passing from the cellars and the historical garden of the castle to the table of the restaurant of the estate. Here, guided by a gourmet expert, you will live the so called “wine and food experience”, tasting the best wines of the estate together with local specialties.

3)Chianti farms guided tour

The first stop of this tour is the little stone village Castello of Montefioralle, for a short walk on the circular main street and for a great view of the vineyards.

You will visit Greve in Chianti, the main town of the Chianti region, stopping in the famous Macelleria Falorni, an historical butcher with an incredible display of pork and wild boar hanging in full view from the ceiling, where you will discover how the typical Fiorentina steack is made by a special part of Chianina cow and will be impressed by a huge quantity of gourmet products: cheeses (kept in the ancient historical basement), salami, sausages, mushrooms, wines, etc...of course, you will be able to do shopping!

For lunch, our driver will bring you to the friendly Fattoria di Montagliari, a typical Chianti farm, where Mamma Bruna will cook her traditional Tuscan family dishes! You will leisurely dine on the outdoor terrace with a wonderful view of the countryside!

After lunch, Davide, the owner, will introduce you to the world of wine: a mini course on wines, balsamic vinegar and vin santo production.

The remainder of the afternoon, our driver will be pleased to discuss with you about what to do: perhaps a visit to a village or to another winery...You will be free to decide!
